On getting old ...

My website starts with a quotation from Henry Ford: "Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young."

I think Henry was old when he said that.

The problem with that quotation is that it assumes that "old" is bad and "young" is good. What's wrong with having an old mind?

Most people in western society equate old with useless, decrepit, valueless. Even when we say that we value our old citizens we refuse to use the word "old". We describe them with euphemisms: senior, golden ager, etc. And when we want to compliment them we tell them that they look young.

How about starting to use "old" in a positive sense!

I am getting old. Good for me! It means I have acquired maturity, wisdom and valuable experience.

And if you're nice to me, I'll even share some of that wisdom with you.
